It was established in under the name Union Pacific Railway, Southern Branch and served an extensive rail network in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, better known as The Katy, was a large granger that maintained an unconventional north-south network within a region dominated by the Santa Fe, Missouri Pacific, and Southern Pacific/St.
Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt). It was also forced to compete against the Rock Island and St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco). The Missouri Pacific's immediate ancestry can be traced back to the Pacific Railroad.
According to Joe Collias's book "Frisco Power: Locomotives And Trains Of The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, ," it was chartered in March of by the State of Missouri to link St. Louis with the Pacific coast.
The project was ambitious but formidable with numerous challenges. By conditions had deteriorated so much on the Katy lines that Frisco pulled out of the venture. This meant Katy had to move the northern terminus of the Texas Special from St.
